BEWARE ! Art Scammers
Just this morning I received an email from a person posing to be very interested in purchasing one of my artpieces. They had even specifically named one of my art pieces that I have on an online artist co-op site. As I read the letter I noticed the poor use of English grammar ... and some very noticeable errors in the general way they spoke throughout the letter. Out of curiousity, I Googled the reply email address and was not surprised to find it was in a >>> long list of emails used to scam the art community.
Please stay on your toes regarding this kind of issue. There are scammers out there who will attempt to take advantage of all walks of life, and we artists are not immune. I've copied the body of the said email below, for you to review and notice how amusingly poor they spoke throughout the letter. They even mentioned they were interested in the same piece, twice. LOL!
"Hi,
Good day, I hope this message finds you in a good condition . I am really impressed with your good and beautiful works, I was going through them and my eyes caught Great Blue Heron & Great Blue Heron, please i will like to know if this piece is still available for sale.
I will like you to give me details about the Unit as well the asking price and we can proceed from there.
Your quick reply will be highly appreciated, i will be waiting to read from you asap.
Kind Regards.
Caroline Moore."
This is the second time I've experienced this kind of thing (once before for some pews I was selling ... and I had actually received a cheque in the mail for 3 times the amount I was seeling the items for ... and was asked to just return the change to them in the form of a money order ... Hahaa!). The cheque was on cheap, stiff bubble jet printer paper and had a coffee ring stain in the lower corner. Upon taking it to my local bank for a closer inspection, the bank manager advised me to NOT cash it of course, and instead take it to the local police department, which I did. It did indeed turn out to be a scam, which I had suspected all along anyway. If I had cashed the cheque, I would have been responsible for coming good for the NSF charges after it bounced as well as the total the bank would have cashed it for. The hope of the scammer was that I would send back the difference in the meantime, before the entire thing came to light in the bank's records.
Stay on your TOES! Sometimes, the old adage ... "If it's too good to be true, it probably is" still rings true in today's world.
Warm regards,
Valerie

SACKVILLE, NB – Celebrating their 75th year the Sackville Art Association kicks off their 75th year with “Painting the Blues” at the Live Bait Theatre on May 8.
The show will not only feature Mark MacMillan and his band but will include an art auction from work done by 15 local artists, many of whom are part of the Thursday’s Painters Club.
“We like getting together on Thursday’s to provide inspiration to each other in a relaxed atmosphere,” club member Barb King said.
“I’ve been involved with the club for 15 years. Once my kids were grown I had more time on my hands to paint,” another club member Ginny Chapman said.
The anniversary event at Live Bait on May 8 is the kick off to a season laced with many activities including a workshop held by Joy Laking on July 7,8 and 9.
“Joy doesn’t usually do workshops anymore but because it’s the 75 anniversary for the Sackville Art Association she has decided to do the workshop,” Laurell Hamilton Sackville Art Association president said.
Association member Gil Collicott said the non-profit association is always busy with fundraisers such as the hospital foundation night where the artists raised $3,100 for the foundation.
“The Art association donates to organizations like Autumn House and many other organizations within the communities of Amherst and Sackville,” Collicott said.
Artwork that will be available at the art auction will include water colours, oils, acrylics, pastels, pottery, sculptures and more from the following participating artists; Vertis, Barb King, Ginny Chapman, Laurell Hamilton, Margaret Wiles, Dorothy Brown, Dianna Leger, Joan Gregory, Janet Tucker, Marry Farrell, Jennine Powers, Colin McCabe, Gil Collicott, Christi Sidhu, Amber Lounder, Emily Boyd, Leslie Reid and Roch Bourque.
